What are the McKinsey Solve Games?

What are the McKinsey Solve Games?

The McKinsey Solve assessment is a suite of digital games developed by Imbellus, a cognitive assessment company acquired by McKinsey in 2021. It replaced the McKinsey Problem Solving Test (PST), a traditional written case-maths paper, as the firm's primary early-stage screening tool for new hires worldwide.

  • Measures cognitive traits: systems thinking, critical reasoning, and decision-making under time pressure
  • Candidates are assessed through immersive simulations, scored automatically with no interviewer subjectivity
  • Used as McKinsey's primary early-stage candidate screening tool worldwide
What games are included in the McKinsey Solve Games?

What games are included in the McKinsey Solve Games?

The Solve assessment includes two games, each testing different cognitive skills under time pressure.

  • Redrock Island: A 35-minute case study across four sequential phases. Candidates interpret data exhibits, perform calculations with a built-in calculator, and submit a structured written recommendation.
  • The Sea Wolf: A 30-minute optimisation game across three ocean sites. Candidates select three microbes per site whose combined attribute averages and traits satisfy each site's specific constraints.

How Can I Best Practice for the McKinsey Solve Game?

Knowing what the games are is only the first step. The candidates who pass are those who've spent time in realistic McKinsey Solve game practice — building the instincts and speed needed to perform under actual test conditions. Our platform lets you start that practice today, for free.

Realistic Scoring

Practice with the same constraint-based scoring logic used in the real assessment. See exactly how your choices are evaluated — not a simplified mock.

Timed Practice Sessions

Each simulator runs under real time limits — 30 minutes for Sea Wolf, 35 minutes for Redrock — so you build the pace needed on test day.

Immediate Answer Review

After every session, access detailed feedback and worked answers. Understand what you got right, what you missed, and exactly why.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about practicing for the McKinsey Solve.

What is the McKinsey Solve assessment?
McKinsey Solve is a digital assessment used early in the McKinsey recruitment process. It replaced the older written Problem Solving Test and consists of two immersive game scenarios: Sea Wolf and Redrock Study. The games are designed to evaluate underlying cognitive abilities including systems thinking, analytical reasoning, and decision-making under time pressure.
What is the best way to prepare for McKinsey Solve?
Preparation is most effective when it closely mirrors the real experience. Practicing with a simulator that replicates the interface, timing, and question structure means you are not encountering the format for the first time on assessment day. Solve Games Guide offers full-length simulations of both games with immediate performance feedback, so you can pinpoint exactly where to improve.
How accurate are the Solve Games Guide simulators?
Our simulators are built to match the mechanics, structure, and time pressure of the real assessment as closely as possible. Candidates who have practised with our platform consistently report that the actual McKinsey Solve felt familiar in format, which reduces cognitive load and improves performance on the day.
How many practice simulations are included in the free plan?
The free plan includes one full Sea Wolf simulation and one full Redrock case study, with no credit card required. Each gives you a complete run of the game so you can gauge the format, pacing, and difficulty before deciding whether to upgrade.
What is the difference between the Solve games and Imbellus games?
There is no difference — they are the same thing. Imbellus was the company that originally developed the McKinsey Solve games. McKinsey acquired Imbellus in 2021, and the assessment was rebranded under the McKinsey name. You may still see "Imbellus" referenced in older preparation guides, but the game format and mechanics remain the same.
What is the Ecosystem game? Has it been phased out?
The Ecosystem game was an earlier Imbellus assessment that tested ecological reasoning by having candidates build a self-sustaining ecosystem. It has been phased out and is no longer part of the McKinsey Solve assessment. The current Solve assessment consists of Redrock Island and The Sea Wolf. If you have seen references to an Ecosystem game in older preparation materials, the Sea Wolf game is its closest successor.
