McKinsey Solve Sea Wolf March 2026 Math Strategy: How to Pinpoint the Final Treatment Quickly

The McKinsey Sea Wolf game is a mathematical optimization challenge under tight time pressure.

If you get 10 minutes per site, and you use 2-3 minutes to get through the Profiling and Categorising phases, that means you have 7-8 minutes to get through 4 rounds of microbe selection in the Prospecting phase AND treatment phase. That is not a lot of time.

If you use our Sea Wolf solver, you can get this done much quicker. If not, you have to be fast: Prospecting is quick estimation—you can’t calculate everything. Treatment is where the multiply-by-3 trick pays off.

Prospecting: You Can’t Calculate Everything

Prospecting has to be quicker. You do not have time to work out every possible combination for each microbe you’re presented with. That’s why some people use our Sea Wolf solver to find optimal combinations.

What you can do: Look at the pre-selected prospect pool and get an idea of where ranges are sitting. Pay close attention to target attributes that are outliers (e.g. 1 or 10) and check whether your pool has enough microbes with those extreme values. You may not get prospecting perfect—McKinsey doesn’t expect you to. However, not finding the best possible treatment from your prospect pool at final submission can have heavy consequences. A solver can guarantee the optimal treatment from whatever pool you build.

Treatment: Pinpoint the Final Combination Quickly

Multiply the target range by 3, then add microbe attributes. This is quicker than adding three values and dividing by 3 to check if the average falls in range.

Example: target range 5–7 for an attribute. Multiply by 3 → 15–21. For three microbes with values 5, 6, 7, the sum is 18. Since 18 is between 15 and 21, you’re in range. No division needed.

Once you have sums, you can quickly see how many points more or less you need per attribute to fall within the range—so you know which microbes to swap.
